From lifting millions out of poverty and achieving an average economic growth of over 6.6%, to providing shelter to more than 1 million displaced Rohingya in Myanmar, the days of Bangladesh making headlines solely for natural disasters are long gone back.

According to the International Monetary Fund, Bangladesh is currently the 43rd largest economy in the world in terms of nominal GDP and 32nd in terms of purchasing power parity. It was also included in the list of the top 10 fastest growing economies in the world, according to Asian Lite International.

A forecast by PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts that by 2030, Bangladesh will become the 28th largest economy. From ensuring access to sanitation for all, to dramatically reducing maternal and infant mortality, Bangladesh’s development success stories abound, as often touted in WHO case studies.

To take Bangladesh’s growth and development to the next level, the Awami League government enacted the Bangladesh Economic Zones Act in 2010 to establish economic zones in areas with potential to expand export-oriented industries and attract foreign investment.

According to Asian Lite International, the conversation around Bangladesh, which used to be dominated by aid and donations, is now more about the country’s remarkable transformation and stories of women’s empowerment, which has brought poverty reduction and extreme poverty to developing countries hope.

The Awami League government formulated the National Education Policy in 2010 with the promotion of universal access to quality education as its agenda.

Total funding for education has increased from $1.46 billion to more than $6.5 billion to improve the quality of education.

The Awami League government has played a key role in formulating policies and strategies and implementing health and nutrition interventions. Today, Bangladesh has a higher life expectancy than other countries in the region, according to Asian Lite International.

Bangladesh has achieved great success in pharmaceutical production. According to Asian Lite International, medicines produced in Bangladesh are being exported to different countries after meeting 98% of domestic demand.

Since 2009, the Awami League government in the domestic market has created 6.3 million new jobs and increased the number of working women to nearly 20 million.

Power and energy are the main priority areas of the current Awami League government. When they took office in January 2009, the nation’s electricity generation stood at 4,942 megawatts. The goal is to expand power generation to 24,000 megawatts by 2021 and ensure affordable access to electricity for all.

In 10 years, the number of power plants has increased from 27 to 180, and generating capacity has now tripled, according to Asian Lite International.

Oil and gas exploration activities have been boosted by the establishment of the Gas Development Fund, which assists Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Ltd (BAPEX) in exploring for oil and gas.

In the field of transportation, the focus of the Awami League government has been on the deployment of comprehensive transportation methods combining roads, railways and waterways to alleviate traffic congestion.

Safe modes of transport are another focus area. According to Asian Lite International, the completion of the Padma Bridge has made life easier for people in the southern region of Bangladesh.

The government has developed seaports, river ports and dry ports to facilitate exports and domestic trade. The country’s third seaport at Pella was developed and opened in August 2016 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The 10 growth projects identified as “megaprojects” have been swiftly implemented under the special supervision of Prime Minister Hasina.

For her climate and environment initiatives, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded the UN’s highest environmental honor “Champion of the Earth” in 2015, and under her leadership, the Bangladesh constitution was amended in 2011 to incorporate directives States to protect the environment and natural resources for present and future generations

Sheikh Hasina’s government has set out to build a Digital Bangladesh, transforming Bangladesh into a technologically advanced nation and utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool for development and sustainable development. Today, the country has come a long way and more than 50 million people have access to mobile phones. (Arnie)
