World News | Beijing expects peak of new crown epidemic within a week

[ad_1]

Beijing [China]Dec 23 (ANI): China could witness a peak in COVID-19 cases within a week, Bernard Orr says, as the mainland reported fewer than 4,000 new symptomatic local cases across the country on Thursday and remains Downplayed the severity of the disease and continued to report no new deaths, the Associated Press of Australia and Casey Hall wrote, according to the news agency.

With the rise of Covid cases this month, China began to roll back its zero-Covid policy in the country.

China’s containment measures have slashed economic growth to the slowest pace in nearly half a century, disrupting global supply chains and trade. More disruption is expected in the short term before the economy rebounds later next year as more Chinese workers fall ill.

In a daily briefing, mainland China reported 3,030 new confirmed infections but no new deaths.

On December 21, 2352 patients were cured and discharged. 56,880 close contacts were released from medical observation. Severe cases rose by 45, according to China’s National Health Commission.

Meanwhile, U.K.-based health data company Airfinity said on Wednesday that the number of daily infections in China could exceed 1 million and the daily death toll could exceed 5,000.

Airfinity’s new model examines data from local provinces in China. The current outbreak is growing faster in some regions than in others. Currently, cases in Beijing and Guangdong are growing at a much faster rate.

Airfinity said in a statement: “Based on trends in regional data, our team of epidemiologists predicts that the first peak will be in areas where cases are currently rising, and the second peak will be in other provinces of China following subsequent surges. Pushed to emerge.”

Airfinity models estimate that case rates could peak at 3.7 million per day in January and could reach 4.2 million per day by March 2023.

Dr Louise Blair, head of vaccines and epidemiology at Airfinity, said: “China has stopped mass testing and is no longer reporting asymptomatic cases. This combination means that official figures are unlikely to be a true reflection of what the country is experiencing.

“China has also changed the way it records COVID-19 deaths to include only those who died of respiratory failure or pneumonia after testing positive. The range of deaths recorded in the data records attributed to the cause of death. This change may dilute the death toll in China.” (Ani)
