WASHINGTON, April 29 (AP) — President Joe Biden presented the Commander-in-Chief Trophy to the Air Force Academy for its victory in a football game against rival U.S. service academies.

“Simply put, you can’t talk about the soul of this country without talking about our military academy,” Biden told the team gathered in the East Room of the White House. “You can’t talk about Service Academy without talking about duty, teamwork, service and excellence. It’s all about you.

During last year’s college football season, the Air Force defeated the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy 10-3 overall. It also beat Baylor 30-15 in the Armed Forces Bowl, which Biden called the coldest bowl game in history with 11 degrees.

The Air Force Falcons have won the trophy 21 times, while the Midshipmen 16 and the Knights 9.

Competitions among service colleges began in 1972. The trophy — topped with three silver footballs — weighs 170 pounds.

“That trophy is bigger than the Super Bowl trophy,” Biden said. “No, it does. So, you may need help carrying it.” (AP)
