WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (AP) — President Joe Biden still wants former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to serve as his ambassador to India, who has been dogged by a sexual harassment controversy.
He plans to renominate Garcetti at the start of the new Congressional session, according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Garcetti was originally nominated a few months after Biden took office, but he never received a vote from the full Senate. He faces charges of turning a blind eye to misconduct by a top aide in his mayor’s office. Garcetti has repeatedly denied knowledge of the allegations.
As Garcetti struggles for confirmation, the White House has publicly defended him, saying he is a qualified candidate and noting that his nomination was unanimously confirmed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
“We think this is a very important nomination,” White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre said Tuesday. “We hope that the full Senate will quickly confirm his nomination.”
All told, the White House on Tuesday will resubmit 85 of the roughly 175 nominations that failed in the last session of Congress.
Biden would also go on to push Denver International Airport CEO Phil Washington to lead the Federal Aviation Administration and Boston Consulting Group managing director Danny Werfell to lead the IRS. Werfel previously served in acting roles under President Barack Obama.
