World News | China deviates from academics and controls international students through Confucius Institutes not to follow the Beijing route

[ad_1]

Beijing [China]Sept. 25 (ANI): Media reports say China, with the help of Confucius Institutes run by various countries, threatens its international students not to follow Beijing’s line.

These Chinese students are increasingly becoming pawns in China’s attempts to exercise control over these students and spread its agenda. However, according to Sagarmatha, it is not just overseas students that China is using coercive tactics.

There is ample evidence that these institutions indulge in espionage under the guise of academic activity. If we look at this from a broader perspective, we see that there are many government-funded cultural institutions that teach others the language, culture and values of a country.

But it’s worth noting that there can be no movement to shut down these institutions as long as they don’t censor certain information for geopolitical gain or distort history, Sagarmatha reports.

This is not the case with Confucius Institutes in China. Many countries have expressed concerns about whether these institutions are functioning effectively.

Another allegation against these so-called academic institutions is that they interfered with teacher recruitment, prescribed curricula, launched protests and selected curricula that distorted history, especially those related to Taiwan, Tiananmen and Tibet.

China and Taiwan have long been at odds over their claims. China claims the island nation of Taiwan is part of itself, but Taipei denies this. To advance their Taiwan agenda, the institutions pressured universities to cancel conferences in Taiwan and the Dalai Lama’s visit.

One of the big advantages China takes advantage of through Confucius Institutes is their connections. These institutions give the Chinese Communist Party direct access to university officials.

Through this engagement, Beijing spreads a positive image of China and avoids dialogue around sensitive issues that negatively affect the image of the CCP.

Founded in 2004, the Confucius Institute has 541 Confucius Institutes and about 2,000 Confucius Classrooms in primary schools, secondary schools and universities in 162 countries. These institutions are public education partnerships between Chinese universities and universities in other countries.

The institutions, named after ancient Chinese philosophers, are expected to promote Confucius’ famous principles of honesty, justice and morality, but in recent years there has been growing concern about whether the institutions are functioning effectively.

Sagarmatha reports that the operations of Confucius Institutes have come under increasing scrutiny in Western countries, leading to the closure of institutions not only in the United States, but also in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Of the 118 such institutions in the US, 104 have closed by the end of 2021, and many other CIs are closing. However, Chinese authorities are trying to persuade universities to reopen similar programs.

Many European countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, etc., have either shut down CIs out of fear that they could be used for espionage, and censored topics for political reasons. (ANI)
