OXON HILL (United States), June 2 (AP) — Soft-spoken but confident, Dev Shah asked precise questions about his obscure Greek roots and scrambled through the countdown second word, and won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night.

Dev, 14, from Largo, Fla., whose spelling career was interrupted by the pandemic, then failed to emerge from his area bees last year. This year, he made his third and final attempt at the national title, making it through the competitive regionals and finally lifting the trophy over his head as the confetti fell.

His winning word was “psammophile,” a layup for a speller of his level.

“Psammo means sand, in Greek?” he asked. “Phile, meaning love, in Greek?”

He absorbed the moment by demanding that the word be used in sentences, which he had described a day earlier as a delaying tactic. Then he put his hands to his face when he was declared the winner.

The runner-up was Charlotte Walsh, a 14-year-old girl from Arlington, Virginia. (Associated Press)
