WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (PTI) — U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated Dr. Vivek Murthy to serve as the U.S. representative on the Executive Board of the World Health Organization.
In a statement, the White House said Dr. Murthy will serve in the new position while continuing to serve as a surgeon.

He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in March 2021 as the 21st U.S. Surgeon General. Previously, he served as the 19th Surgeon General under President Barack Obama.
As the nation’s physicians, surgeons’ mission is to help lay the foundations for a healthier nation, relying on the best scientific information available to provide the public with clear, consistent, and equitable guidance and resources.

“During his tenure as the 21st Surgeon, Dr. Murthy focused on drawing attention to and collaborating with government to address some key public health issues, including the growing proliferation of health misinformation, the ongoing adolescent mental health crisis, health and hygiene burnout in the worker community, and social isolation and loneliness,” the White House said.
As Deputy Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service, Dr. Murthy also commands a uniformed force of more than 6,000 dedicated public health officials serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations.
“Dr. Murthy, the first Indian-American surgeon, grew up in Miami and is a graduate of Harvard, Yale School of Medicine and Yale School of Management. He is a renowned physician, research scientist, entrepreneur and author who lives in Washington D.C. and his wife, Dr. Alice Chen, and their two children,” the White House said.
