WORLD NEWS | Driver of Indian origin charged in Australia over accident that killed four passengers in Punjab

MELBOURNE, Jan 13 (PTI) — A 41-year-old driver of Indian origin has been charged in Australia in connection with an accident in which his car collided with a utility vehicle, killing four passengers from India, media reported.

Harinder Singh, who remains in hospital under police custody, was charged on Wednesday with four counts of causing death by dangerous driving, The Age reported.

The accident happened on January 4 when Singh was driving a Peugeot with four male passengers through an intersection in Shepparton, Victoria, Australia.

The car collided with a Toyota Hilux ute that was towing a trailer. All four passengers died at the scene.

Shepparton Punjabi community leader Dharmi Singh confirmed on Tuesday that the four men, as well as the driver, were all Punjabi, Shepparton News reported.

“They (the deceased) were visiting friends in Shepparton,” he said.

Three of the four men among the dead were “ejected” out of the vehicle, according to police, who are investigating whether the passengers were wearing seat belts.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Justin Goldsmith of Victoria Police said last week early indications were a “T-bone collision”, the ABC reported.

A T-bone accident, also known as a side impact accident, occurs when the front end of one vehicle collides with the side of another vehicle.

“As a result of the collision, three men in the rear of that (Peugeot) hatchback were ejected and died. The front passenger was also killed,” he said.

“Very few people are ejected while wearing their seat belts. Therefore, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of wearing seat belts,” Goldsmith said.

The 29-year-old pickup truck driver from Nathalia was taken to hospital with minor injuries after pulling over to assist the scene.

Singh will appear in court in June.public transport
