Suva (Fiji), Feb. 16 (PTI) Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and Fiji’s President Wiliame Katonivere jointly launched a $1.3 million solar project largely funded by India in the South Pacific nation on Thursday.

Together they launched the Solarization of the Pacific Heads of State Residential Project (under Solarization of Heads of State) at the Fiji State House.

“It was a great pleasure to visit the President of Fiji His Excellency Ratu William Katoniwere at the State Capitol in Suva. Together for the inauguration of the daylighting of the State Capitol. This is the latest in a series of events supported by India in the Pacific Islands First one,” Jaishankar tweeted.

“Fiji, as a founding member of @isolaralliance, is a strong partner in sustainable development,” he added.

According to sources, the UN Resident Coordinator and the Pacific Islands Development Forum (PIDF) signed the project to increase resilience in the Pacific in Suva in June 2020.

The two-year project, costing more than US$1.3 million, is primarily funded by the India-United Nations Development Partnership Fund.

Under this project, photovoltaic (PV) systems will be installed on buildings of national significance such as 11 countries (Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste , Tonga), Tuvalu and Vanuatu).

Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to the South Pacific archipelago to attend the 12th World Hindi Congress, which is currently being held here.

The first World Hindi Conference was held in Nagpur in 1975. So far, 11 World Hindi Conferences have been held in different parts of the world. The last meeting was held in Mauritius in 2018.

He also witnessed a parliamentary session in Fiji on Thursday.
