This is despite the dampening effect of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine on business activity, including tourist flows. However, bilateral trade between the two countries is still booming.
India’s accession to the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) in July 2021 further strengthened New Delhi’s ties with Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking world, with India celebrating Portuguese Language Day and hosting a Portuguese-speaking cultural festival in Goa, among other events.
Earlier, in October last year, India and Portugal held the third round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Lisbon. The two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed cooperation in defense, cultural and people-to-people relations.
The consultations were co-chaired by MEA Secretary (West) Sanjay Verma and Special Envoy Rui Vinhas, Director of the Foreign Policy Department of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Diplomat Verma also called on Portugal’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Francisco André, the foreign ministry said in a news release.
The two sides conducted a comprehensive review of bilateral relations focusing on issues such as high-level political contacts, implementation of immigration and mobility agreements, and deepening economic and trade relations. They explore new and existing avenues of cooperation in science and technology, defense, culture, and people-to-people relations. (Arnie)
