“I am delighted to inform you that we have declared our candidacy for our next term on Council for 2028-29 and we look forward to returning,” he said. Membership Dec. 31.

After hosting the anti-terrorism signature event, Jaishankar addressed reporters at the UN Security Council site, saying that December is the last month for India to serve as a current member of the Security Council, and this is the eighth time that India has sat on the mighty horseshoe table.

“In our Bureau Eight, we’ve tried to bring many topics of contemporary relevance, such as maritime security, technology in UN peacekeeping, UN reform and counter-terrorism, to the center of the agenda and UN debate,” he said.

“We also seek to be the voice of the global South on many issues of concern. We are not only trying to express their interests and concerns, but also trying to understand whether we can act as a bridge in the Security Council,” Jaishankar said, thanking other members of the Security Council.

“It’s been a pleasure working with them,” he said.

India’s first eight terms on the Council were 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992 and 2011-2012.

On December 1, India assumed the monthly rotating presidency of the Security Council for the second time after August 2021, during which India served a two-year term as a member of the US joint organization during its two-year tenure.

India, whose 2021-2022 tenure on the Security Council ends on December 31, has been at the forefront of efforts to call for urgent reform of the Security Council, which remains deeply divided in addressing current challenges.

India claims that the council in its current form does not reflect today’s geopolitical realities and that its credibility is at risk if a developing power like India does not have a permanent seat at the horseshoe table.
