Kathmandu [Nepal]Nov 19 (ANI): Nepal is gearing up for Sunday’s general election, as 275 House of Representatives seats and 550 provincial assembly seats are up for grabs in the country’s biggest democratic event.

Thousands of polling stations have been set up across the country, according to the Nepal Election Commission. Across the country, 18,879,570 eligible voters will cast their ballots at 10,892 polling places.

For the smooth conduct of the election, as many as 2,45,960 officials and security personnel were deployed across the country. Voting will begin at 7am local time and end at 5pm local time, when people will be entitled to exercise their right to elect two members each for the House of Representatives and the Provincial Assembly.

“Since this is an election for the Chamber of Deputies and the Provincial Council, first, voters will vote for candidates in competition to elect the first to come hor (FPTP) system, followed by proportional representation (PR). After the HoR vote, they will vote in the same way for the Provincial Assembly, which means they will cast a total of 4 votes,” Suresh Bhattarai, deputy electoral officer at Kathmandu polling stations, told ANI.

All seven provincial assemblies of the Himalayan Nation have a total of 550 seats, of which members for 330 seats will be elected from the FPTP and 220 seats will be elected through the PR system.

“The electoral process will start at the time prescribed by the Election Commission, i.e. 7 am and will continue until 5 pm. All voters in the area will be entitled to exercise their right to vote at designated polling centres. Separate lines are for males and women, as well as arrangements for differently abled people, senior citizens, and other Election Commission directives to make the place accessible to all, have been followed,” Jamuna Mishra, another chief electoral officer from Kathmandu, told ET. ANI.

For Sunday’s election, the electoral commission has set up 141 additional temporary polling stations where prisoners and duty officers far from their areas will be able to exercise their voting rights. They number 450,000 officers and prisoners, according to the Election Commission.

For Sunday’s election, electoral agencies have released nearly 40 million ballots for the House of Representatives and provincial councils through the FPTP system. (Arnie)
