World News | Ex-Pakistan minister warns inflation will rise by 40% if govt accepts IMF conditions

[ad_1]

Islamabad [Pakistan]Jan 9 (ANI): If the PDM coalition government accepts the conditions put forward by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to complete the ninth review of Pakistan’s $7 billion Expansion Fund loan, the former Energy Minister and Pakistani Hammad Azhar, leader of the Justice Movement (PTI), said.

Speaking at the ceremony, PTI leader Hammad Azhar said that the people of Pakistan are facing a severe food crisis.

Azhar criticized the MLM-led coalition government, saying the economy had been on the brink of collapse over the past nine months. He said Pakistani Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif should instill confidence in the country on these issues. Hammad Azhar said Pakistan had to make a decision on a new program with the IMF as the ongoing deal with the IMF was set to expire in June this year. He called it necessary to have a newly elected government in Pakistan that could sign an agreement with IMF, according to Geo News.

“Pakistan will have to decide on a new program with the IMF as the ongoing deal with the international lending body will expire in June this year. Hence, it is necessary that there should be a newly-elected government in Islamabad that strikes a new deal with lenders,” Hammad Azhar was quoted as saying by Geo News.

Former Pakistani energy minister Hamad Azar said they needed snap elections, stressing that the five-year government could decide. Azhar expressed concern over the situation in Pakistan, saying the country was heading for disaster and that a “non-serious government” could not bring the country out of crisis, Geo News reported.

“The country is heading for disaster. An unpopular and unserious government cannot steer the country out of the ongoing crisis,” Geographic News quoted Hamad Azhar as saying.

Earlier on January 7, Pakistani Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif said he held talks with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. In a tweet, Sharif said he had informed Georgieva of the Pakistani government’s determination to complete the IMF program. He also spoke to Georgieva about the economic difficulties facing Pakistan. Shehbaz Sharif tweeted: “In a phone call with the IMF Managing Director yesterday, I told her that the government is determined to fulfill the terms of the IMF program. I also explained Pakistan’s economic difficulties, especially in the devastating After the floods. The IMF mission will be coming to Pakistan soon.”

On 6 January, Shehbaz Sharif announced that an IMF mission would visit Pakistan in 2-3 days to “begin and complete” the Ninth Economic Review. Speaking at the inauguration of the Hazara Electricity Supply Company, Pakistan’s prime minister said he urged Kristalina Georgieva to soften the terms of the deal.

“I spoke with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva [Thursday] And stressed that Pakistan wants to complete the IMF bailout package,” Geo News quoted Shehbaz Sharif as saying.

“I urge her to soften the terms of the deal because the masses can no longer afford it. We are already taxing the richer sections of society,” he added. (Arnie)
