TEHRAN, July 10 (Xinhua) — A fire broke out at an oil refinery in southern Iran on Monday, injuring eight firefighters, the official Islamic Republic of Iran news agency reported.
The news agency did not reveal the cause of the fire, but reported that two of five storage tanks at an oil depot near Bandar Abbas, Iran, were on fire and that firefighters were injured while trying to extinguish the blaze.
Authorities said there were concerns the fire could spread to more tanks. The port is located at the mouth of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and is an important import and export hub.
Similar fires have occurred in Iran and other oil facilities in the past. Authorities blame decades of international sanctions as well as hot summer weather.
The temperature in Bandar Abbas on Monday was close to 37 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit). (Associated Press)
