HONG KONG, March 2 (AP) — Hong Kong firefighters battled a blaze at a construction site in the city’s popular shopping district early Friday morning.
At around 11pm on Thursday night, a fire broke out at the Sailors Club redevelopment project site in the densely populated Tsim Sha Tsui district. Multiple floors of the building – including scaffolding – caught fire, with burning debris floating in the air. No casualties were reported.
Imperial Group’s redevelopment plan is to create a 42-storey architectural landmark to house the historic club and a new hotel, its website says.
The plot is surrounded by a shopping mall, several hotels, and some residential and commercial buildings.
Residents of a residential building near the scene had to be evacuated, police said, but authorities did not say how many people were affected.
Four adjacent buildings were also on fire, but the blaze was extinguished, police said.
Tsim Sha Tsui is a tourist and shopping district in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is known for its skyscrapers and iconic views of the city’s Victoria Harbour. (Associated Press)
