Hasina is expected to visit India in September for the G20 summit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart and current chairman of the bloc of large economies, Narendra Modi.

According to tradition, the presidency of the G20 invites international organizations such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, and the World Trade Organization to participate in the meeting.

India will hold the presidency of the Group of 20 from December this year for a one-year term.

“Our prime minister is likely to meet her opponent during the G20 summit, apparently at the last meeting before the elections between the two countries,” said a foreign ministry official.

The Bangladeshi foreign minister is scheduled to attend the G20 foreign ministers meeting in New Delhi on March 1-2.

The G-20 or Group of Twenty is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies, comprising 19 countries and the European Union (EU).

G20 members account for approximately 85 percent of global GDP, more than 75 percent of global trade, and approximately two-thirds of the world’s population.

Member countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Kwatra’s visit to Bangladesh follows the return of the foreign minister on Tuesday from Kathmandu, where he was there to strengthen bilateral ties between India and Nepal.
