Prof. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, Chandigarh, welcomed all distinguished guests. He mentioned that French architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret designed several of the city’s landmark buildings, including the main PGIMER building known as the Nehru Hospital.
PGIMER was established thanks to the vision of the late Chief Minister of Punjab, Sardar Partap Singh Kairon and eminent medical educator of United Punjab at that time, with the support of the first Prime Minister of India, Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru.
The institute was established in 1962 and Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital now known as “Nehru Hospital” on 7 July 1963.
The institute was originally under the government of the undivided state of Punjab. Following the reorganization of the state, administrative control of the Institute was transferred to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966.
The Institute became an autonomous institution by Act of Parliament in 1967, under the Ministry of Health.
Professor Lal also mentioned the typical traditional furniture of PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The delegation visited the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital, the main library and the A Research Building, and was impressed by the beam and open staircase design of the A Research Building.
It was fascinating for the French delegation to see that some of the traditional furniture was still in use in the main library. Lenin expressed interest in cherishing the common heritage.
A monumental contribution to the modern movement, the architectural work of Le Corbusier has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and includes 17 architectural projects from around the world.
His five-year career is worth exploring, as it includes structures spread across Europe, Japan, India, and North and South America.
The Parliament House in Chandigarh, India, is considered one of the most important works realized by the architect, having been commissioned during what Le Corbusier called a “patient study”. (Arnie)
