RALEIGH (United States), Nov. 20 (AP) — A girl died Saturday in North Carolina after being hit by a vehicle towing a float for a holiday parade in North Carolina, police said.

The driver who lost control of the vehicle and hit the child has been charged with reckless driving and other violations, the Raleigh Police Department said in a release.

Witnesses told WTVD-TV that people attending a Christmas parade in Raleigh heard the driver of the pickup truck screaming that he lost control of the vehicle and was unable to stop it before crashing.

Police said the girl who was hit by the truck was participating in the march. The News and Observer reported that the girl was part of a dance troupe.

Olivia Bruce, a 14-year-old member of the dance troupe, told the newspaper the truck almost hit her as well.

“We started dancing in the parade, and then all of a sudden, we just heard a lot of horns. When we turned around, we saw the truck was almost on our backs, so we turned and left,” Bruce said.

No one else in the parade was injured in the collision.

Following the accident, the parade was canceled. Police advised drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area.

The driver was one of three people in the vehicle that towed the buoy at low speed, police said.

Investigators interviewed the driver, who was charged with misdemeanor causing motor vehicle death, careless and reckless driving, using improper equipment, unsafe conduct and carrying a firearm at a parade.

The names and ages of the girl and the pickup truck driver were not immediately released.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the victim and those who witnessed this tragic event,” police said.

Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin expressed condolences to the girl’s family and friends.

“Started today with such joy,” the mayor tweeted. “My heart is so full. Now it grieves for the young girl who had a tragic accident on the parade route.” (AP )
