ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (PTI) The head of Pakistan’s mission in Kabul, who survived an attack on Pakistan’s embassy in Kabul on Friday, was immediately condemned by Islamabad and called for an investigation.

Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani, Pakistan’s charge d’affaires in Afghanistan, was attacked by unidentified gunmen while walking in the embassy compound but was held for his protection, sources told Geo News. Deployed security personnel rescued them.

A security guard was “severely injured” in the attack while protecting the mission leader. The head of the mission and other officials are being temporarily recalled to Pakistan, the source said.

At the time of the incident, there was no activity inside the Pakistani embassy due to the weekly break.

Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif has condemned the “despicable assassination attempt” and called for an investigation.

“I demand immediate investigation and action against the perpetrators of this heinous act,” the prime minister tweeted.

He further said, “Salute to the brave security guard who took a bullet for his life. Praying for the speedy recovery of a security guard.”

Nizamani headed the mission in Kabul on 4 November. The attack came just days after State Minister Hina Rabani Khar visited Kabul and held talks with senior officials.
