Islamabad [Pakistan]Dec 28 (ANI): Many injured in scuffles, shelling and baton attacks between Give Rights Movement and police as HDT protests threaten to erupt, Gwadar The situation has become tense as Pakistani vernacular media outlets in Urdu report on Pakistan’s ruling body in the port city.

Clashes have erupted between locals and security forces in Gwadar this month as protests against illegal fishing turned violent after some were arrested in the port city, the Baluchistan Post reported.

Under the Anti-Terrorism Act, more than 80 people were arrested in Pisni and cases were registered against 34 people.

Gwadar has been staging peaceful protests for the past two months under the leadership of Hidayat Ur Rahman Baloch and Husain Wadala. The government has launched a sudden crackdown on them, Intekhab Daily reported, adding that Jamaat e Islami condemned the “deadly crackdown”.

Liaqat Baloch called on the government to talk to the protesters, accept their demands and release their leaders, saying instead of peaceful means, the government used power and violence to suppress them, Intekhab Daily reported.

“The use of violence and unconstitutional activities is increasing people’s sense of deprivation. The government should honor the promise it made to the protesters a year ago,” Intekhab Daily quoted Baloch as saying.

Amir Jamaat-e-Islami (Central Punjab) leader Mohammad Javed Kasuri strongly condemned the torture and arrest of Maulana Hidayat Rehman Baloch and other leaders of the Gwadar rights movement, Jasarat reported.

“Instead of enforcing the agreement, the Balochistan government has used violence and force against the men and women who participated in the two-month-long peaceful sit-in. The government has crossed the line of brutality and shamelessness. The campaign to give Gwadar rights will continue until the demands are met. Accepted. The government should stop using cheap tactics,” Jasarat quoted Kasuri as saying.

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Maulana Abdul Haq Hashmi said he condemned the government’s harsh approach to the peaceful people of Gwadar, Ummat reported.

He said the Gwadar sit-in was against border trade issues and the trawling mafia.

Last year, the government negotiated with protesters but failed to reach a deal.

He further stated that if the government wanted to negotiate, then an enabling committee should be formed for this, Umat reported.

HDT activists have been protesting in the city for almost two months. The protesters’ demands include an end to illegal trawling in the Gwadar waters, numerous security checkpoints and an opening of Pakistan’s border with Iran to trade. (Arnie)
