DUBAI, May 25 (AP) – A Hong Kong-flagged vessel ran aground briefly in Egypt’s crucial Suez Canal on Thursday, but authorities said they were able to refloat it after it temporarily disrupted its course .

Tracking data shows that Xinhaitong 23 ran aground at the south entrance of the Suez Canal. Leth Agencies, which oversees traffic on the canal, admitted to the grounding. More than two hours later, Leth said they were able to refloat it.

Egyptian authorities did not immediately acknowledge that the ship had run aground. It was not immediately clear what effect the grounding would have on traffic in the canal linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. However, tracking data showed no ships were moving in that section of the canal when the ships got stuck.

Tracking data showed the ship described its condition as “out of command”. Tugs surrounded it to refloat it.

The ship is a bulk carrier and usually carries cargo. The boat measures approximately 190 meters (625 feet) by 32 meters (105 feet).

The Ever Given, a huge container ship that crashed on a single-lane section of the canal in March 2021, blocking the waterway, is bigger. A massive salvage effort by a tugboat team, aided by the tide, rescued the skyscraper-sized vessel six days later, ending the crisis and allowing hundreds of waiting ships to pass through the canal.
