United Nations, 1 December (PTI) — India on Thursday assumed the rotating presidency of the 15-nation UN Security Council for December, during which it will host signature events on counter-terrorism and reforming multilateralism.
Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, will sit in the presidential chair at the horseshoe-shaped table. Days before India’s presidency, she met UN Secretary-General António Guterres and General Assembly President Chowba Korosi to discuss her priorities during her presidency of the powerful body.
“Great to call on Secretary General @antonioguterres today. Discussed India’s priorities and work plans ahead of @UN Security Council presidency in December,” Kamboj tweeted on Tuesday.
On Monday, Kamboj met with Korosi, who tweeted: “Always a pleasure meeting Indian PR @ruchirakamboj. Today’s discussion focuses on India’s presidency of the Security Council, which begins Thursday. I look forward to the month ahead .”
India will serve its two-year term as a member of the United States University of California, United States, for the second time after August 1, 2021, from December 1.
India’s 2021-2022 term on the council ends on December 31, and Kamboj, India’s first female permanent representative to the UN in New York, will sit on the chair this month.
Fighting terrorism and reforming multilateralism will be one of India’s main priorities during its presidency of the UN Security Council, culminating in its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the 15-nation powerful body.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar will travel to New York on December 14 and December 15 to chair the Security Council’s “signature event” on reforming the new direction of multilateralism.
As usual, on the first day of the rotating presidency, a breakfast meeting for permanent representatives, a meeting of political coordinators and a monthly work plan consultation will be held. Kamboj will then brief reporters at the UN Headquarters on India’s priorities for the month and the council’s work plan.
