New Delhi [India]April 12 (ANI): India and Canada have agreed to build momentum in commercial ties and enhance cooperation in technology, energy, education, consular issues, counter-terrorism and ease of mobility, according to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

The MEA read a statement during the India-Canada Foreign Office Consultation (FOC) held in Ottawa on April 11, during which the two sides discussed contemporary regional issues, including the Indo-Pacific region and cooperation in multilateral organisations.

The Indian delegation was led by MEA Secretary (East) Saurabh Kumar, while the Canadian side was led by David Morrison, Deputy Foreign Minister, Global Affairs Canada.

“They welcome regular dialogue and meetings of bilateral mechanisms, including upcoming ministerial visits, which will help broaden the bilateral agenda,” the MEA said.

“In the context of India’s G20 presidency, Canada expresses its support for India’s leadership. Both parties will work together to ensure the success of the G20,” it added.

The last FOC was held in March 2022, and according to an official statement, the next FOC will be held in India. Prior to this, the Flag of Convenience will be held virtually in March 2021.

India and Canada have friendly relations. In February, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly visited India and met with her Indian counterpart Jaishankar.

During the Indo-Canadian Strategic Dialogue, both ministers expressed interest in deepening cross-sector cooperation and looked forward to an early trade agreement (EPTA).

Canada and India have deep ties based on shared democratic values ​​and longstanding friendship. Extensive bilateral cooperation between Canada and India covers technology, finance, education, defense and security.

The deep people-to-people ties between Canada and India are at the heart of our relationship. There are 1.8 million Indian-Canadians in Canada and India is the main source of new immigrants to Canada, the release said.

India and Canada are conducting technical negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), covering trade in goods, services, investment, trade facilitation, etc. Separate MoUs have implementation mechanisms to advance relationships in energy, mining, agriculture and more.
