A lawyer for 20 years, Monica has been involved with many civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels.

“It means a lot to me because I represent H-town best, so for us, I’m happy,” she said.

Judge Ravi Sandil, the state’s first South Asian-American judge, presided over the ceremony in a packed courtroom last Friday, ABC 13 reported.

“This is a really big time for the Sikh community,” Sandil added, “and when they see people of color, people who are a little bit different, they know they have that possibility. Manpreet not only An ambassador for Sikhs, and an ambassador for all women of color.”

Sikhism is the fifth largest religion in the world. According to ABC 13, there are an estimated 500,000 Sikhs in the United States, including 20,000 in the Houston area alone.

However, prior to Manpreet, there was not a single female Sikh judge in the country.
