KATHMANDU, Nov. 20 (PTI) — A delegation from the Election Commission of India led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar observed Nepal’s general election on Sunday and visited several polling stations.
Nepal voted for a new parliament and provincial assemblies amid heightened security, hoping to end the political turmoil that has plagued the Himalayan nation for more than a decade and hampered economic growth.
Federal and provincial polls were held Sunday to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives and 550 seats in seven provincial assemblies.
Kumar, 62, led a four-member delegation that included two officials from the Election Commission of India.
Foreign election observers monitored polling centers in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur, MyRepublica news portal reported.
It said 46 organizations were assigned to monitor the vote, and a team including officials from the election commissions of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Sri Lanka and South Korea oversaw Sunday’s election.
Kumar led the Indian delegation, while the Bangladeshi delegation was led by its Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Kazi Habibul Awal. Likewise, Bhutan’s CEC Sonam Topgay and Maldives Election Commission Chairman Fuwad Thowfeek oversaw Nepal’s elections.
A team — including two Sri Lankan election commissioners, MM Mohammad and SB Divaratne; South Korean Election Commissioner Kim Chang-bok also oversaw the vote, the report said.
Nepal’s Election Commission Act allows any person or organization, domestic or foreign, to supervise election-related work. Individuals and organizations involved in monitoring observed concerns about electoral legitimacy, independence, fairness, neutrality, and equality.
