JERUSALEM, Dec. 18 (AP) — Israel says it is deporting a Palestinian lawyer and activist to France despite objections from the French government, claiming he has ties to a banned militant group.

The expulsion of Salah Hammouri underscores the fragile position of the Palestinians in Israel-annexed East Jerusalem and could lead to a diplomatic row with France.

The French government has repeatedly called on Israel not to carry out the expulsions.

Israeli Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked announced the deportations in a brief statement.

“I am pleased to announce today that justice has been done and terrorist Salah Hamuri was expelled from Israel,” she said in a videotaped statement.

Israel says Hamuri is an activist of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Hamuri was held in administrative detention without charge. Shaked ordered his deportation after his detention ended.

Hamuri was born in Jerusalem but has French citizenship. (AP0
