World News | Israel: Troops kill Palestinian who shot female soldier

[ad_1]

JERUSALEM, Oct. 20 (AP) — The Palestinian gunman who killed an Israeli soldier earlier this month was shot dead after opening fire on a security guard in a West Bank settlement near Jerusalem, the Israeli prime minister said.

Uday Tamimi, from the Shufat refugee camp near Jerusalem, was killed by Israeli security forces on Wednesday and was the subject of a manhunt that lasted more than a week, Yael Rapid said.

Police commander Uzi Levy told reporters that Tamimi opened fire on security guards at the entrance to the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim in the West Bank east of Jerusalem. Levy said Tamimi was armed with a pistol and an explosive device.

Paramedics said a security guard was being treated for a gunshot wound in the hand.

On 8 October, Tamimi allegedly fired at a checkpoint from close range, killing a 19-year-old female Israeli soldier and seriously injuring a security guard, before disappearing towards Shuafat. The manhunt continued for days as Israeli security forces set up a cordon around the refugee camp in East Jerusalem.

Rapid said Israel “will take stern action without hesitation about terrorism.”

Hazem Qasim, spokesman for the radical Hamas group that controls Gaza, said the killing of Tamimi would not stop the uprising in the West Bank.

Tamimi “will remain a Palestinian national icon,” he said.

It was the latest clash in a wave of violence between Israeli security forces and Palestinians since the spring, when Israel began regular attacks on the West Bank and East Jerusalem following a series of Palestinian attacks that killed 19 people inside Israel.

More than 120 Palestinians have been killed in fighting this year, making 2022 the deadliest year since 2015. The Israeli army said most of the Palestinians killed were militants. But stone-throwing youths protesting the invasion and others not involved in the confrontation were also killed.

Israel occupied the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war. The area is now home to approximately 5,00,000 Israeli settlers. The international community generally sees settlements as illegal and an obstacle to peace.

Palestinians demand the entire West Bank, along with East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, as a future independent state. (Associated Press)
