ROME, May 29 (AP) — A student wounded his teacher with a hunting knife and brandished a toy gun at classmates at a high school on the outskirts of Milan on Monday, police said.
Classmates later recalled that the 16-year-old girl stood up shortly after her lesson in the town of Abbiategrasso and attacked her teacher from behind in the arms and head, according to Italy’s ANSA news agency. The student reportedly fled the room when the attacker brandished a gun at his fellow students.
The teen was sitting on the floor when they entered the room, there was no one else in the classroom and there was no resistance, police told state television. According to photos released by police, the bloodied knife and gun were found on a desk with a notebook.
News reports said the 51-year-old teacher bled profusely and was taken to hospital, also suffering from shock. Police said the student was taken to a hospital psychiatric unit in what appeared to be self-harm.
Principal Michele Raffaeli told reporters outside the school that the student had been having academic problems and his parents had been called to a meeting with school authorities scheduled for Tuesday.
Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara visited the injured teacher in hospital.
“This teacher has done an exemplary job for a boy who already had several problems,” the minister said in a video on Facebook.
Valditara added: “We must say ‘enough’ to aggression so schools can be safe places, and at the same time, reflect on the introduction of (the) psychologists in schools.” (AP)
