This follows a chance for strong allies India and Kuwait to demonstrate military and maritime ties to trainees by sending the 1st Training Squadron, comprising Indian Navy ships Tir, Sujata and Coast Guard ship Sarathi, to Kuwait’s Al-Shuwaikh port.

The ships arrived in port on 4 October and were deployed in the Persian Gulf as part of a training deployment. The naval vessel was warmly welcomed by senior officers of the Kuwaiti Navy, border guards and Indian embassy officials, as well as school children. The three-day port call includes professional networking, cross-ship visits, community outreach and social interaction. The 1TS ships are based in Cochin and are part of the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Naval Training Command.

The deployment of 1TS is designed to expose trainees to various evolutions at sea and port familiarization. The current deployment also provides an opportunity for trainees to learn about India’s socio-political, military and maritime ties with countries friendly to our maritime neighbours.

Inco has a friendly tradition and a long history, and has withstood the test of time. This year, India and Kuwait are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The two countries have maintained regular high-level contacts.

Kuwait stands with India during the second COVID and has provided quick support to India in the form of oxygen and other relief supplies. In this regard, an air/sea bridge has been established between the two countries. On May 4, 2021, Kuwait sent a special plane to carry 282 oxygen cylinders, 60 oxygen concentrators, ventilators and other medical supplies. The Indian Navy ships INS Kolkata, INS Kochi, INS Tarkash, INS Tabar and INS Shardul used ISO tanks to carry liquid medical oxygen, oxygen cylinders, concentrators and other medical supplies to India.

More than 425 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen, 12,500 oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators, ventilators and other medical equipment were shipped from Kuwait to India during the month and a half operation. The Indian community in Kuwait also contributed to these efforts.

In a telephone conversation with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Nasser Mohammad Al-Sabah at the time, Jaishankar expressed his gratitude for the support provided by Kuwait. “Enthusiastic call today with Kuwait’s FM @anmas71. Expressed our appreciation for the sea bridge with Kuwait which allows for smooth flow of oxygen,” Dr S Jaishankar tweeted after the call. (Arnie)
