GEORGE TOWN, April 22 (PTI) Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on Guyana’s President Ilfaan Ali and Vice-President Bharat Jagdeo here on Saturday and co-chaired the fifth The India-Guyana Joint Commission meeting held a comprehensive discussion on topics such as agriculture, defense cooperation and infrastructure development.

Jaishankar called on President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo of Guyana here, and conveyed the cordial greetings from Prime Minister Modi.
“It was a pleasure to call on Guyana President Ilfaan Ali and Vice President Bharat Jagdeo at the State Assembly. Conveying personal and warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their recent visit to India paved the way for us relationship provides new impetus,” Jaishankar tweeted.
Jaishankar discussed various issues with the President and Vice President of Guyana.
“Initiatives discussed in agriculture, trade and investment, health and pharmaceuticals, energy including renewables, defence, innovation and technology, tourism and development partnerships,” he said in another tweet.
“Agree that opportunities should be explored more effectively through deeper engagement, including business interactions,” he further added.
Jaishankar was also seen receiving a cricket bat and a jersey with his name on it from President Ali because of the importance of the sport to the South American country.
“It’s only natural to discuss cricket while visiting Guyana – land of Rohan Kanhai and Lance Gibbs. Also noted President Irfaan Ali’s enthusiasm for Millets after his visit to India,” he tweeted, attaching a note he had received Photos of the bat and President Ali’s jersey.
Jaishankar also held separate bilateral meetings with counterparts from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Barbados on Friday.
During the bilateral meeting, the minister addressed various issues including expanded cooperation, trade, climate change, digital transformation, the health sector, agriculture and the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
