WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 (AP) A House Jan. 6 committee has subpoenaed Donald Trump to testify about the 2021 Capitol attack.
The panel voted unanimously to force the former president to appear in court. “We have to seek testimony under the oath of the core players on Jan. 6,” said Rep. Liz Cheney, the committee’s vice chair.

Cheney added: “We have an obligation to seek answers directly from the people who started it all. Every American has a right to those answers.”
The vote to seek Trump’s testimony comes as the panel is providing vivid new details and evidence of Trump’s mindset as he refuses to admit losing to Joe Biden that led to the 2021 Capitol attack.
Before that, the group showed never-before-seen footage of congressional leaders calling officials for help during the attack.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer can be seen talking with the governors of neighboring Virginia and Maryland.
Later, footage showed Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell and other GOP leaders as the group sought help from the acting attorney general.
“They broke the law in many different ways — frankly, at the instigation of the President of the United States,” Pelosi was heard saying.
Also, in a never-before-seen Secret Service message, the team provided evidence of how extremist groups are fueling the fight for Trump’s presidency, planning to send a violent force to Washington in the weeks before the attack.
“Their plan was actually to kill,” someone sent a note to the Secret Service more than a week before the Jan. 6 violence.
Members of the right-wing Proud Boys plan to march on Washington on Jan. 6 in enough numbers to outnumber police, the Secret Service warned in an email dated Dec. 26, 2020.
“It feels like the calm before the storm,” one Secret Service agent wrote in the group chat.
The House panel has warned that the Capitol uprising was not an isolated incident but a warning of the fragility of the nation’s democracy in a post-Trump era.
“None of this is normal, unacceptable or legal in the Republic,” said Republican Rep. Liz Cheney.
“No one can defend Donald Trump as being deceived or unreasonable. No president can defy the rule of law and act in this way during a constitutional republic.”
Just weeks before the congressional midterm elections, the 10th public meeting is delving into Trump’s “mindset,” Democratic Chairman Benny Thompson said.
