China’s industrial hub Shanghai reported 54 cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, including 22 local asymptomatic carriers, Xinhua reported today.

However, the Chinese Health Commission said a total of 39 COVID-19 patients had been discharged from the hospital in the past 24 hours.

The total number of COVID-19 patients discharged after recovery in mainland China reached 220,265 as of Wednesday, Xinhua said, citing a statement from the National Health Commission.

Despite these claims, China is witnessing a surge in new cases.

According to the Daily Mail, COVID-19 has returned to the central Chinese city just days after Xi Jinping visited the sprawling city.

Millions of people are facing mandatory testing and thousands are under targeted lockdowns due to the recent outbreak in Beijing, just days after the city began to lift restrictions on the wider outbreak since late April. Widespread restrictions have been in place for more than a month. China has had a severe impact on the livelihoods of its residents in the first half of 2022 due to strict lockdowns and strict testing procedures in different parts of the country.

The economic impact of the zero-coronavirus strategy also dented revenue. Fiscal revenue fell 4.8% year-on-year in the four months to April, mainly due to tax rebates aimed at supporting businesses, according to the Ministry of Finance. (ANI)
