Kathmandu [Nepal]December 28 (ANI): Two-way trade between Nepal and China via the Rasuwa/Keerong port has officially resumed operations on Wednesday, Nepal’s foreign ministry said.
“The Rasuwa/Geelong port between Nepal and the People’s Republic of China has officially resumed two-way trade operations with effect from today,” Nepal’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
“The Ministry of Commerce of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China organized an official ceremony at Kerung today to celebrate the opening of the port. Similarly, the Hilsa/Purang port has also been opened for one-way trade on 26 December 2022,” it added.
Nepal’s foreign ministry said the restoration of the port is expected to increase bilateral trade between Nepal and China. The Chinese embassy in Kathmandu stated that China expects to import more goods from Nepal.
The Kathmandu Post reported that six trucks loaded with Nepalese goods entered China through the port.
“In recent years, Jilong Port has continuously improved its infrastructure and customs clearance efficiency, which has driven rapid growth in trade. From 2015 to 2020, the total import and export trade volume of Jilong Port reached 14.71 billion yuan,” said the Chinese embassy. Press release quoted by Nepalese newspaper.
Vital trade between China and Nepal was resumed twice after Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda”, chairman of the Nepal Communist-Maoist Center, was sworn in as Nepal’s prime minister on Monday.
He was sworn in by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari a day after he was named prime minister following fresh elections in the Himalayan nation.
Dahal, also known by his pseudonym Prachanda, was appointed prime minister for the third time after securing the support of 169 members of parliament to form a new government. (Arnie)
