New Delhi [India]Nov 17 (ANI): The 26th multinational maritime exercise “MALABAR 22” culminated in the sea off Japan on Nov 15, the Ministry of Defense said on Wednesday.

The exercise, which also marks the 30th anniversary of the exercise, is hosted by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).

According to a release by the Ministry of Defense, the Indian Navy was represented by the ships Shivalik and Kamorta of the Eastern Fleet under the command of Rear Admiral Sanjay Bharat, Commander of the Eastern Fleet.

The Malabar series of exercises began in 1992 as bilateral exercises between the Indian and US navies and gained prominence with the addition of the Australian and Japanese navies.

The sea phase of MALABAR 22 took place over five days near Yokosuka and saw live fire, surface, air defense and anti-submarine warfare exercises and tactical procedures. Another highlight of the sea phase was the conduct of naval warfare exercises, which allowed all four navies to solidify interoperability and hone their tactical skills.

The fast-paced exercise involved 11 surface ships, including a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with an integral aviation element, as well as four long-range maritime patrol aircraft, integral helicopters and two submarines. The exercise also included the exchange of “sea knights” between participating ships.

In addition to combat drills and exercises, bilateral logistical support agreements between participating countries were validated in this Malabar exercise.

Exercises help to enhance understanding of each other’s methods of operation and the ability to cooperate to address myriad maritime challenges. (Arnie)
