The Maldives, India’s key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), holds a special place in the Prime Minister’s ‘SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision and ‘Neighborhood First Policy’.
“The visit by the foreign minister of the Maldives is a continuation of a series of high-level mutual visits between the two sides and is expected to inject further impetus into the substantive bilateral cooperation between the two countries,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in an official press release.
Abdullah Shahid said on Twitter that his visit was in line with Maldives’ tradition of high-level exchanges with India.
“In keeping with the tradition of high-level engagement between #Maldives and #India, I will be on an official visit to New Delhi at the invitation of EAM @DrSJaishankar. Looking forward to continuing our discussions on strengthening #MaldivesIndiaPartnership,” Shahid tweeted.
India and the Maldives exchanged 10 memorandums of understanding at a ceremony in Male last month attended by Union Foreign Ministers V Muraleedharan and Abdulla Shahid.
Muraleedharan noted that the MoU will facilitate the implementation of development projects in the fields of arts, sports, education and health with the assistance of the Indian grant. (Arnie)
