SINGAPORE, April 12 (Xinhua) — A 25-year-old man of Indian origin was charged with assault and other offenses in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday for allegedly wielding an axe, according to media reports. .

In a video posted on YouTube, Manohar Thirunavukkarasu was seen brandishing an ax on Stamford Road in the CBD on Tuesday morning while crossing the road towards Raffles City shopping centre, The Straits Times reported.

He then walked towards a police car parked at a nearby traffic light, where two uniformed officers pointed their weapons at him.

The man then threw his axe, which landed on a nearby sidewalk, reports said. In an earlier statement, police said they were alerted to a fight on Stamford Road on Tuesday morning.

It’s unclear, though, whether the footage was filmed before or after the fight.

“A 25-year-old man was subsequently arrested for possessing (a) offensive weapon, using criminal force to prevent a public servant from performing his duties, and using abusive language towards a public servant,” the daily quoted police as saying.

Police also said a 71-year-old man was taken to hospital conscious and a 29-year-old man is assisting with the investigation.

Manohar will be remanded in custody at the Institute of Mental Health for a medical examination. His case has been adjourned until April 26.
