MEXICO CITY, Dec. 17 (AP) — The Mexican military said late Friday that the violent Jalisco drug cartel kidnapped a man in command of an army in the northern border city of Nuevo Laredo, across from Laredo, Texas. Colonel of the detachment.

Colonel José Isidro Grimaldo Muñoz was kidnapped while on vacation in Jalisco, the cartel’s stronghold, while he was on vacation further south.

It was the second time in less than a month that Mexican military officers have been attacked by a cartel.

General Crisóforo Martínez Parra said the missing colonel was vacationing at a country lodge in the town of Tapalpa, Jalisco state, when armed members of the cartel kidnapped him after a traffic accident.

“He was stopped by armed men in two vehicles who roughly forced him out of the vehicle and took him to an unknown location,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement.

The military said Grimaldo Muñoz had a “good career record” and had served in Nuevo Laredo, a city controlled by the Northeast Cartel, an offshoot of the old Zetas cartel.

It’s unclear if the Northeast Cartel had any ties to the Jalisco gang, or knew who the Colonel was when he was kidnapped. The Ministry of Defense said it was continuing to search for him.

In November, an Army general serving in the Mexican National Guard was killed in a shootout in the north-central state of Zacatecas.

General José Urzúa Padilla is the highest official of the State Guard. He died while hunting a suspected drug cartel gunman in an area where the Jalisco gang competed for turf with the rival Sinaloa cartel and allied groups. (Associated Press)
