MEXICO CITY, Feb. 26 (AP) — Mexico’s president posted a photo on his social media account Saturday of what he said appeared to be a mythical forest elf resembling an elf.

When President Andrés Manuel López Obrador posted a photo of “Aluxe,” the mischievous woodland spirit from Mayan folklore, he didn’t seem joke.

López Obrador wrote that the photo “was taken three days ago by an engineer and it looks like a limousine,” adding, “Everything is mysterious .”

The nighttime photo shows a tree with branches forming what appears to be a halo of hair, and possibly stars forming the figure’s eyes.

López Obrador has long expressed reverence for indigenous cultures and beliefs. Engineers and workers are building a tourist train in the Yucatan Peninsula, a favorite project of the president.

According to traditional Mayan belief, “Aluxes” were small, mischievous creatures that inhabited forests and fields and loved to play tricks, such as hiding things. Some leave small offerings to appease them.

The ancient Mayan civilization reached its peak in the Yucatan Peninsula and adjacent areas of Mesoamerica from 300 AD to 900 AD, but descendants of the Maya continued to live on the peninsula.

Although the Spanish conquered the area between 1527 and 1546, many people continued to speak the Mayan language and wear traditional clothing, while also maintaining traditional food, agricultural, religious, and medical practices. (Associated Press)
