MICHIGAN, March 2 (AP) – Michigan State University announced Wednesday that public access to most buildings will be restricted at night, in response to a February shooting that killed three students and wounded five. One of a series of security measures.

Beginning March 13, students, faculty and staff will need to use a campus ID card to access buildings electronically between 6 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. on weekdays, officials said. There will be exceptions for events normally open to the public.

MSU plans to lock down 1,300 classrooms from inside through the fall semester. Next fall, students, faculty and staff will also be required to complete “aggressive violent intruder training.”

“The actions we have outlined today set us on a path to regain the sense of safety that has been taken away from our community by violence,” President Theresa Woodruff said. “These measures will provide stronger security on campus, And better prepare our communities to deal with these unfortunate circumstances.”

Just after 8:00 pm on February 13, a gunman shot and killed eight students. Two students were killed in the Berkey Hall academic building and another was killed in the MSU Union, a gathering place for students and the public. Both remain closed.

The shooter, Anthony McRae, 43, later killed himself away from the campus, police said.

MSU has 50,000 students and hundreds of buildings in East Lansing, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Detroit.

The university said it would expand its existing network of 2,000 campus cameras. It will also hire outsiders to analyze the immediate response to the shooting. The report will be made public.

The shootings are the latest in the deadly New Year’s Eve 2023, when dozens of people have died in mass shootings so far. In 2022, there will be more than 600 mass shootings in the United States, in which at least four people were killed or injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive. (Associated Press)
