World News | MoS Lekhi calls for celebration of Durga Puja’s inscription on UNESCO Heritage List

New Delhi [India], September 22 (ANI): Durga Puja is considered one of the biggest festivals in the world. This year is even more special as UNESCO has included the Durga Puja on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the first festival in India to do so.

As part of promoting India’s intangible cultural heritage, the Minister of State for Culture and Foreign Affairs, Minakash Lekki, in a press conference, highlighted the inclusion of Durga Puja on the UNESCO Intangible Humanity the importance of the Master List of Cultural Heritage and urges everyone to come together to celebrate the festival’s international recognition.

Minister of State for Culture and External Affairs Minakash Lekki highlighted the government’s joint efforts in promoting India’s incredible culture and heritage. She also said: “India has been selected as a member of the 2022-26 cycle of the Intergovernmental Committee on UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). In achieving this feat, India will also’ Garba’ as the next consideration for the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Meenakashi Lekhi provided more details, explaining the lengthy procedures involved and how the government’s approach made the Durga puja’s successful inclusion on the UNESCO list possible.

The Ministry of Education is the nodal agency of UNESCO in India, the Ministry of Culture is involved in preparing the archives for inclusion in the UNESCO list, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mobilized international support for the proposal to be voted successfully at UNESCO, Lecky said.

With the help of Sanjit Natak Akademi of the Ministry of Culture, the archives of the Durga puja have been prepared and sent to UNESCO, she said. She added that everyone should look beyond petty politics and celebrate together the Durga Puja’s inscription on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

She further added: “The nomination of Durga puja for inclusion in the list of intangible cultural heritage is a national pride. We considered all the proposals in the direction of our nomination of the Durga puja as a national intangible cultural heritage, as it spans the state and celebrates it By everyone. In the process, it brings everyone together, which is unity in diversity.”

The Federal Minister also acknowledged the valuable contributions of the artisans involved in making idols for Durga Puja and Pandar, which brought the whole festival to great fanfare.

Therefore, to celebrate their great contribution, the Ministry of Culture is hosting a special event at the Indian Museum in Kolkata on 24 September, in which 30 artisans and artists who are closely involved in the celebration of the Durga Puja will be honoured.

These include Shilpi’s of Durga’s Protima, members of RajBaris, Pandal makers, artists, Dhakis (drummers), jewelry makers of Pujaris and Protimas, etc. Meenakashi Lekhi and MoS Education, Dr. Subhas Sarkar will continue to attend. (ANI)
