Earlier, a ceremony was also held at the general headquarters in Rawalpindi in the presence of General Munir and his predecessor, retired general Kamal Javed Bajwa.
Similar events are also held at various regiment headquarters across the country.
Addressing the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif said the tragic events of May 9 should be a wake-up call that all those who seek to endanger the country will be identified and exposed.
“By targeting, desecrating and destroying Shuhada’s monuments and attacking symbols of the country, these villains have attacked Pakistan’s ideals and identity and given the country’s enemies reason to celebrate,” he said.
In his message, President Arif Alvi said that the day was being marked to pay tribute to “the unprecedented courage and sacrifice of our ancestors and our security force personnel who made great sacrifices for their country”.
The decision to mark Martyrs’ Day came after supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan attacked and defaced the Martyrs’ Monument on May 9.
Violent protests erupted on May 9 after paramilitary rangers arrested Khan from the Islamabad High Court complex. In response to Khan’s arrest, his Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf party operatives vandalized more than a dozen military installations, including the Regiment commander’s residence in Lahore, the Mianwali air base and the ISI complex in Faisalabad. The mob also stormed the army headquarters in Rawalpindi for the first time.
Because of the widespread violence, the government cracked down on Khan’s supporters, arresting thousands and threatening court-martial.
