Deuba has been proposed for the post by senior Congress leader and former House Speaker Ram Chandra Poudel, while Purna Bahadur Khadka has backed the proposal. Thapa, 46, was proposed by Shekhar Koirala and supported by party vice-chairman Dhanraj Gurung, general secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma Bishwa Prakash Sharma and leader Pradeep Poudel.

The party is scheduled to hold the parliamentary party election from 8 am to 10 am. The Party’s 89 Newly-Elect Lawmakers Are Eligible to Vote in the Electful For Parliamentary Party Leader. Candidates will need at least 45 votes to get the position.

As Nepal’s parliament is due to elect its parliamentary leader on Wednesday, opposition parties CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal-United Marxist-Leninist) and CPN-Maoist Center parliamentary leaders have been chosen without challenge.

The opposition UML, which split into two factions a year and a half before the general election, has proposed party chairman and former prime minister KP Sharmaoli as leader of its parliamentary party.

Oli continues to stand unopposed in the decisions he makes and in other party functions.

CPN-Maoist Center – another power-sharing party that has not been in opposition since entering mainstream politics, also has Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda as an unopposed or unchallenged party leader.

While the Maoist Center plans to hold meetings to discuss parliamentary leaders, it does not have any plans to hold elections. Instead, Dahal has been lobbying other political parties to back him for prime minister.

“We will pick our parliamentary party leader after the swearing-in of parliamentarians on Thursday. It would be the chairman who would be elected the leader of the parliamentary party, it’s obvious,” said Shakti Basnet, the party’s deputy general secretary.

Parties representing Nepal’s parliament must appoint a parliamentary party leader who, under the Himalayan nation’s constitution, qualifies as a candidate for the post of prime minister.

However, governments formed with the support of two or more political parties must testify in parliament within 30 days of their formation. The first meeting of the newly elected House of Representatives has been called for Thursday. (Arnie)
