On September 6, 2022, a 17-year-old girl filed a complaint with then-Nepal national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane, accusing him of raping her. Two days after the formal complaint, the Kathmandu police received an arrest warrant against him.

On the same day, Lamichhane was banned by the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN). The next day, the Nepalese cricket star announced that he was leaving the CPL team and would return home soon.

On September 11 last year, immigration authorities blacklisted the cricketer accused of rape so police could arrest him as soon as he entered the country. After nearly two weeks of silence on September 25, 2022, the team captain said he was isolating to deal with the pressure, but would return to defend himself.

The next day, the Nepalese police circulated a circular among all Interpol members seeking help in arresting him. On October 6, 2022, Lamichhane arrived in Nepal and was arrested. On October 10, 2022, Lamichhane was remanded in custody for seven days to allow police to continue their investigation. On October 13, 2022, the court again extended the remand period by five days.

The order was extended for another four days on October 19, 2022. The remand was extended for two days on October 23 last year.

On October 31, 2022, the Government Attorney’s Office filed an indictment seeking a 10- to 12-year prison sentence for Lamichhane. On November 4 last year, the cricketer was placed in judicial custody pending final judgment.

On January 12 this year, the Patan High Court ordered Lamichhane to be released on conditional bail.
