Kathmandu [Nepal], Feb 16 (ANI): Nepalese MP Chandra Bhandari and his mother Harikala Bhandari were badly burned in an explosion caused by a LPG leak. Bhandari’s mother, Harikala Bhandari, died Thursday of her injuries at Kirtipur Burns Hospital in Nepal, where she and the congressman were being treated.

According to a statement from Kirtipur Hospital, the two are hospitalized in a critical condition and will be airlifted to Mumbai for further treatment.

While Bhandari suffered 25 percent burns, his mother suffered 80 percent burns, according to a statement from Nepal’s Kirtipur Hospital.

Bhandari and his mother were injured after a cooking gas cylinder exploded at their home in Budhanagarh, Kathmandu, at 10.30pm (local time) on Wednesday, the Kathmandu Post reported.

Kirtipur Hospital earlier said in a statement that since treatment in Nepal was not possible, the pair needed to be sent to a hospital outside the country that specializes in treating burns.

According to Bhandari’s personal secretary, Bhuwan Bhusal, the LPG cylinder exploded while the family was sleeping.

In 2020, eight tourists from Kerala suffocated to death in Nepal after a possible gas leak from the heater in their room at a mountain resort in the Makwanpur district. The tourists were airlifted to HAMS hospital here, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. (Arnie)
