WASHINGTON, April 12 (AP) — One person was killed and three others were seriously injured in a shooting outside the funeral of a homicide victim in the U.S. capital Tuesday, according to police.
Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Conti said an officer was stationed near the funeral home in northeast Washington, where a funeral was being held when gunfire erupted around 12:30 p.m.
The shooting happened about 20 minutes after the funeral of the homicide victim who was shot in March. Conti said the victim’s family had asked police to have officers near the funeral.
Conti said at least four people were shot. A man died at the scene and three others — two men and a woman — were taken to hospital in critical condition, according to a DC Fire and EMS spokesperson.

“At this point, it appears that a couple of people on the block were specifically targeted,” Conti said at a news conference outside the funeral home. “We’re not sure why that happened, why these people were targeted, more or less why they Be targeted at funerals. We don’t understand.”
Police have not arrested anyone in connection with the case.
The gunfire came as the country was recovering from a recent spate of mass shootings, including the killing of five people at a Louisville bank on Monday. (Associated Press)
