Religious minorities in Pakistan live in fear as cases against them continue to rise.
Earlier, the Human Rights Commission of Sindh Province took note of a case of wrongdoing by a police officer violating religious freedom.
The officer was seen preventing a shopkeeper from expressing religious sentiments in his community, according to video circulating on social media platforms.
“The Act violates Article 20 of the Constitution, which guarantees the freedom to practice and administer religious institutions. It also contradicts a 2014 ruling by former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani of Pakistan. The landmark judgment on minority rights issued on June 19,” she said.
Regarding the video, the SHRC chairman called for the responsible officer to be held accountable for his actions, Dawn reported.
After the intervention of the Standing Committee of the Municipal People’s Congress, the police officer has been suspended for disciplinary action.
SHRC strongly condemns the officer’s actions and asks Sukkur DIG and Ghotki SSP to review the case and take necessary disciplinary action against the perpetrators.
“Furthermore, the Sindh government must investigate the matter and ensure that justice is served,” it said.
“SHRC reaffirms its commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens, regardless of their religion or belief,” it added. (Arnie)
