Islamabad [Pakistan]May 14 (ANI): The ruling coalition party Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) on Sunday sought permission from the local administration to hold a sit-in outside the Supreme Court building in Islamabad, The Tribune reported.

Former minister and PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed to reporters that an application had been lodged with the relevant authorities on the matter.

Notably, the Supreme Court came to the rescue of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday as it declared the arrest of the country’s top corrupt operative at the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) illegal and directed his immediate release The head of the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), the Tribune reported.

Imran was subsequently granted provisional bail for two weeks by the IHC in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Shortly after the IHC’s decision was reported, the PDM announced that it would hold a protest demonstration in front of the SC over its “injustice”.

“We have decided to protest against this. As a representative of the PDM, I appeal to the people of the country to arrive in Islamabad on Monday. We will hold a mass sit-in protest,” Jamiat Ulema said. Head of e-Islam – Fazl (JUI-F) and PDM President Maulana Fazlur Rehman was speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, the Tribune reported.

Fazl has said every worker in his party will join the protests and no one will stay home.

“If anyone tries to stop us, we will fight back with clubs, slaps and punches if necessary,” he warned.

Meanwhile, the federal cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif issued a strong condemnation of Pakistan’s Chief Justice Omar Atta Bandiyar’s “extraordinary intervention” in Imran Khan’s arrest. The cabinet deemed the Supreme Justice’s intervention “misconduct”.

According to the Union Cabinet, Imran Khan’s arrest was carried out in accordance with the Constitution, laws and legal procedures in “open and closed cases of corruption and corrupt practices”.

The Union Cabinet reiterated its position that the CJP’s interference was unjustified and condemned it in the strongest possible terms. It condemned the CJP’s interference as “misconduct”.

It may also be noted here that a meeting was held on Saturday, chaired by the SC’s Registrar, to review SC’s security arrangements in response to Monday’s planned protest outside its premises, but no representatives from the Islamabad Police attended the meeting, Tribune reported.

The SC Registrar expressed his concern over the lack of cooperation from the Islamabad Police.

The Supreme Court also decided on Monday to hear the request of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to review its order to hold elections in the Punjab parliament on May 14, The Tribune reported.

The petition will be heard the day after the second expiration of the court-ordered election deadline. (Arnie)
