Khyber Pakhtunkhwa [Pakistan]Jan 11 (ANI): Due to rising flour prices, nanbais (bakers) in Swabi city, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan closed their tandoors on Tuesday and went on strike, Dawn reported.
Bakers are demanding an immediate increase in the price of roti (bread) after the price of a 20kg bag of flour has risen by PKR 500 in the past three days.
Dawn reported that bakers wanted an increase of PKR 10 for 170 grams of bread which was already being sold at PKR 20, claiming that they were experiencing financial difficulties and the current situation prompted them to demand an increase in the price of kebabs.
Dawn reported another deputy commissioner, Gohar Ali, saying that the prices of commodities including flour are constantly changing in the market and they cannot allow the price of roti to rise now as it will burden consumers.
Responding to a question, he said the District Price Review Board had the authority to raise the price of barbecue.
Meanwhile, people from all walks of life in Chota Lahor tehsil have blocked traffic on the Yar Hussain route to protest the recent increase in prices of Pakistani flour and other important commodities.
Protesters warned they would not open roads until district administrators committed to meaningful measures. (Arnie)
