WARSAW, April 29 (AP) Authorities in Warsaw took over Saturday a school building serving the children of Russian diplomats and the military following a decision by a Polish court, prompting an angry reaction from Moscow.

Poland’s foreign ministry said it had asked Warsaw authorities to take back the property, which Poland said Russia should have returned years ago.

“The bailiff’s execution was … in full agreement with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was based on a court order that gave the Polish state full ownership of the building that the Russian embassy had illegally occupied for many years,” Polish foreign ministry spokesman Lukasz Jasina said.

Police and a court official came to the building, which is far from the Russian embassy and not part of diplomatic premises. They asked the Russian side to hand over the building by Saturday night, which happened.

However, the Russian foreign ministry said Polish authorities had “hacked” the school, which it said was located inside the Russian embassy, in what it called a “flagrant violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations”.

“Such disrespectful actions by Warsaw go beyond the framework of civilized inter-state exchanges, and we will not impose harsh reactions and consequences to the Polish authorities and Polish interests in Russia,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

Warsaw authorities said the building would be given to the Warsaw school system, which lacks school buildings.

Poland has sought to reclaim some property used by Russia since it emerged from Moscow’s communist-era rule. (Associated Press)
