New Delhi [India]August 24 (ANI): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the state funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on September 27, a government source confirmed on Wednesday.

The Indian government source added that it will be a one-day visit.

The Japanese government has set Abe’s state funeral on September 27. The ceremony will be held at the Nippon Budokan at the Kitanomaru National Garden in Tokyo. According to Kyodo News, the prime minister may also hold a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

Japan is one of India’s key allies in the region, and the two countries are cooperating comprehensively in a quartet alongside the United States and Australia. Modi and Abe have maintained a friendly relationship during and after the latter’s tenure.

During an official visit to Japan by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, Abe invited the Indian prime minister to his home in Yamanashi prefecture, a move that showed the relationship between the two leaders was particularly friendly.

In early May, Modi met Abe nearly two years after the Japanese prime minister stepped down, as part of his visit to Japan for a four-nation summit.

Abe was attacked during a campaign speech in Nara city on July 8.

Police said he was conscious immediately after being hit in the back, but during the shift he became critical and suffered cardiac and pulmonary arrest. Later that day, a local hospital pronounced him dead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a day of national mourning in India after Abe’s assassination.

Prime Minister Modi also wrote a blog titled “My Friend, Abe-san”. “After Abe’s death, Japan and the world lost a great dreamer. And, I lost a dear friend,” he said.

Abe’s funeral will be held on September 27, which will be the second state funeral for the former prime minister since World War II.

The first was for Shigeru Yoshida in 1967. Other prime ministers received the services of the Joint Cabinet Office and the Liberal Democratic Party. (ANI)
